Maruti Suzuki has been synonymous with fuel-efficient cars in India. Known for offering segment-best mileage in petrol and CNG vehicles, the company is now set to enhance its portfolio with strong hybrid cars. By 2025, Maruti plans to introduce a hybrid car delivering an impressive mileage of over 35 km per litre.
Expanding Hybrid Offerings
Maruti Suzuki, in collaboration with Toyota, is preparing for a major shift towards electric mobility. The automaker aims to broaden its alternative fuel technology offerings by introducing hybrid options across multiple price segments. These hybrids will prioritize locally developed HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) systems and superior fuel efficiency. The petrol engine in these vehicles will serve as a range extender, enhancing both performance and mileage.
Z12E Engine to Lead the Hybrid Transition
The upcoming facelift of the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, expected to launch next year, will debut the company’s strong hybrid technology. This system will feature the Z12E engine, first introduced in the new Swift. The facelifted Fronx will become the first sub-four-meter SUV in India to boast this advanced hybrid technology, offering mileage exceeding 35 km/l.
The hybrid version of the Fronx may also include minor cosmetic upgrades, enhancing its appeal further. With this development, Maruti Suzuki aims to solidify its position in the growing hybrid vehicle market in India.
Why the Fronx Hybrid Matters
Launched during the 2023 Auto Expo, the Fronx has quickly gained popularity, selling over 1 lakh units in just seven months in the domestic market. Competing with models like the Hyundai Exter and Tata Punch, the Fronx has also emerged as Maruti Suzuki’s second export model to Japan after the Baleno.
With its hybrid setup, the Fronx is poised to become a fuel-efficiency leader in the SUV segment, further reinforcing Maruti’s reputation for high-mileage vehicles.
Collaborative Success with Toyota
Maruti Suzuki and Toyota have already tasted success with their strong hybrid models like the Grand Vitara and Urban Cruiser Hyryder. Building on this momentum, the companies are gearing up for an aggressive push in the hybrid and electric segments by 2025. The Fronx is expected to play a pivotal role in this strategy, contributing significantly to India’s hybrid vehicle market.
